Description
A straight sleeve bearing is a sliding contact bearing in which the surface of the shaft slides on the surface of the bushing. It consists of a cylindrical sleeve with a smooth inner surface that allows the shaft to rotate within it with minimal friction. The contact angle between the bearing and the journal is 3600, so it is a full journal bearing. With lubricant added, the sleeve bearing provides a low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistance.
Attributes
- Designed to minimize friction between the shaft and bearing surfaces
- Accommodates misalignment between shaft and bearing surfaces
- High resistance to shock loads, minimizing vibration (and therefore noise)
Applications
Straight sleeve bearings are suitable for applications where press-fitting into a housing bore is the most practical method of bearing retention. They are used in crankshaft bearings of gasoline and diesel engines, centrifugal pumps, and large electric motors.
