Description
The alternator belt tensioner is a device that maintains constant tension on the engine's serpentine belt. It consists of a pulley mounted on a spring-loaded arm. The arm applies a consistent force on the belt, compensating for any slack that may develop. The tensioner may also include a damping mechanism to absorb vibration and ensure smoother operation.
Attributes
- Nominal torque of 46 ±4.6 Nm at 17° from free arm position
- Damping ratio = 20 % to 60%
- Minimum Arm Travel = 45°
- Designed to accommodate flat, parallel V-belts
- Spring torque slope of 0.4 Nm/degree
Applications
The alternator belt tensioner is mounted on the engine front housing and compensates for the natural stretch and wear of the alternator belt over time. As the belt ages and experiences thermal expansion and contraction, its tension decreases, reducing the performance of the drive belt driving the alternator.
